Quick answer
The water cycle is drawn in 6 steps: a sea at the bottom, a sun in the corner, evaporation arrows rising from the sea, a cloud forming, rain falling on a mountain, and a river returning the water to the sea. Write a number next to each stage (1 evaporation, 2 condensation, 3 precipitation, 4 runoff) and the drawing is ready for school.

The water cycle in words a child understands
Water never disappears; it travels. The sun warms it and it rises as light vapor (evaporation), it cools up high and gathers into tiny drops that make clouds (condensation), the clouds get heavy and rain or snow falls (precipitation), then the water runs in rivers back to the sea (runoff) — and it starts again. The same water a dinosaur once drank might be in your child's glass today!
Materials
A4 paper in landscape, a pencil, an eraser, colored pencils (blue, yellow, green, brown, light gray) and a thin black pen for the arrows.
Drawing steps
1. Ground line and sea: draw a horizontal line in the lower third of the page; on the left, draw small repeated waves — that is the sea. 2. Mountain: on the right, draw a big triangle with a slightly tilted peak and a zigzag line for snow at the top. 3. Sun: a circle in the top-left corner with short rays. Add a smiling face if your child likes. 4. Evaporation arrows: from the sea surface draw 3 wavy arrows going up (like long S shapes) — this is number 1. 5. Cloud and rain: above the arrows draw a cloud made of touching circles (number 2), and from it short slanted lines or drops falling on the mountain (number 3). 6. River: from the foot of the mountain draw two wavy parallel lines running down to the sea (number 4). Add a small arrow showing the direction of flow.
Coloring and numbers
Color the sea and river blue, the sun yellow and orange, the mountain brown with a white top, and the clouds very light gray. Write the numbers 1 to 4 inside small circles, and at the bottom add a key: 1 evaporation, 2 condensation, 3 precipitation, 4 runoff. Teachers love the key because it proves the child understood instead of only drawing.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Arrows in every direction: make the cycle turn one way (up from the sea, then right, then down) so it reads easily.
- Cloud right above the sea: move it toward the mountain a little; rain falls on land and then runs off.
- Too many colors: 5 colors are enough; a science drawing needs clarity, not decoration.
FAQ
Which grades is this drawing for?
Grades 1 to 4: younger children draw only the four stages; older ones add snow and groundwater (dashed lines under the ground).
Should I draw groundwater?
If the child is in grade 3 or above, draw a dashed line under the mountain heading to the sea and label it "infiltration"; it is an extra stage the curriculum mentions.
How long does it take?
15 to 20 minutes in pencil, and 10 minutes to color.
